Nick Herrmann was an amazing young man and basketball player, who had positive and lasting impact on everyone he met. In 2018, he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in his left leg. He battled with all his faith and strength to beat this horrible disease. He had 6 inches of his fibula removed and spent over 70 days in the hospital throughout his lengthy treatment. Nick eventually was diagnosed cancer free and was determined to play basketball again. He displayed incredible determination, work ethic and belief to get back on the court for his Senior high school year.
Nick persevered and led Torrey Pines High School to an undefeated regular season in 2020-2021. Torrey Pines made it to the CIF San Diego Section Championship game against Torrey's rival Cathedral Catholic. In the championship game, Nick scored 30 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, and made the biggest shot of San Diego high school basketball history; a near half court buzzer beater for the win. This immaculate shot cemented Nick as a legend in the local basketball community.
Nick received a scholarship to Cal State Northridge, fulfilling a lifelong dream to play college hoops. In an unfair twist of fate, his cancer came back. Nick fought vigilantly with everything he had, all while keeping his renewed battle a secret. He wanted people to remember his image as the man who beat cancer and overcame the odds to win the CIF championship. Sadly, Nick Herrmann passed on August 6th, 2022. His impact on the San Diego community and his extremely determined attitude will forever be remembered and live on through all basketball players who were blessed enough to meet him.
We are committed to raising funds to help accelerate cancer research and create better outcomes for patients and families. 100% of every dollar raised funds collaborative research among the best scientists from San Diego's top research institutions including Rady Children's Hospital (where Nick received his treatment), UC San Diego, Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Prebys, Scripps Research, and La Jolla Institute of Immunology.
